The New Moon at 9-degrees of Scorpio is exact today at 5:46am, and it’s a doozy-whopper. This is Pluto’s sign, and Pluto is well placed for a New Moon and a Lunar cycle of epic change and transformation. This energy, and the entire lunar cycle ahead, is going to be very intense. Of course, I live in the United States, and election day is almost upon us, and this New Moon is telling that story directly. And my usual hyperbole, which I often must check and let you know I’m getting dramatic with my language, absolutely fits. Every bit of the heightened language in this post is merited by virtue of the intensity of this New Moon.

Part of it is the Scorpio Mansion itself. The veil is thinnest in the Scorpio mansion, and we are leaning into death, endings, and darkness as we follow the Sun (in the north) as it descends even lower on the ecliptic. Scorpio and death are synonymous, and without our graceful acceptance of death – and therefore change – we cannot ever reset and start over. Scorpio is where we understand that you don’t get to “love and light” unless you have walked through the dark night. We set intentions in the Scorpio mansion for all the things we want to create that we are deeply passionate about.

And though this is a New Moon aligned with the beginning of a cycle; Scorpio is where we understand that all things must die to be reborn. So, this is also a perfect New Moon to prepare yourself at a deep emotional level for a year up ahead that is going to be rich with change and transformation, some of which will be hard to grapple with. In Scorpio, there is no intensity that we cannot respond to with resilience and fortitude. Keep this in mind while you are setting intentions today, while also thinking about where life is likely to take us in the coming year.

Every inch of as at the individual level is involved in this New Moon, by virtue of all the personal planets in play. In fact, the biggest news of this lunation is the Opposition between Mars and Pluto. This is an explosive energy of radical change, and it takes front and center because Scorpio is ruled by Pluto, so this New Moon and the entire lunar cycle ahead is all about change, with a decided attention on old structures, created by Capricorn. Some of those structures are being dissolved and dismantled while Pluto spends these last two months in Capricorn. But with this particular Opposition from Mars, dissolved and dismantled give way to words like destroyed and toppled. Things are going to change and change mightily between the beginning of this cycle and the end.

There is also a Grand Water Trine being formed, and Mars is part of that pattern as well as the Opposition with Pluto. Mercury in Scorpio has our minds and perception aligned with the season, and we are ready to dig deep, both for the intentions we set, as well as the ways we will use our voice now, and in the lunar cycle ahead. Neptune holds one corner of this Trine, so we are immersed in our connection to Spirit right now, and considering the bumpy ride that November is going to be, I urge you to remember that no matter how difficult things get, we are being carried by energies much greater than ourselves. When you put these two patterns together, the Mars/Pluto Opposition and this Grand Water Trine, you have a Kite formation. Kite’s fly. And as such, this will be some lunar cycle.

Mercury and Venus are also powerfully engaged, rounding out every personal planet’s participation. Mercury in an Opposition with Uranus is also about change, the kind that happens fast and furiously, and our minds are in alignment with the idea of allowing radical change to happen in an instant. Venus is loosely Squaring Saturn, but also Trining Chiron, so our personal healing journey is front and center as well, with our heart’s able to receive some marching orders from Saturn, because our wounded spaces are not barking at us courtesy of the Trine from Venus to Chiron.

I do not use astrology to look at or speak about politics and pop culture. If I did, I’d probably be much more well known. But I don’t fear monger and I simply don’t use astrology in that way, so you will only rarely hear me talk about such things directly. But one cannot separate this New Moon and the election cycle in the United States, even if you do not live here. But remember, if it’s happening out there (picture me pointing) it’s also happening in here (picture me with my hand on my heart). Polarization, fear, othering, competition, and all the ugliest parts of attempting to live in harmony and community with others is up in a huge way right now on the planet, both outside of us, and in our own hearts as well.

The Age of Aquarius promises Peace for Humanity, and a world in which every last human on the planet is cared for. But it starts with each of us, on the inside of our psyche. The world will turn, politics and governments will do what they will do. But until more of us on the planet are willing to die to self in order to be reborn as more whole and complete, we will not see that peace. Do your part with this lunar cycle by asking yourself, what needs to transform in order for me to be a good shepherd of the human experience into the future? Then allow that change to take place, and let’s join together and create Peace for Humanity, at last. Have at it.
