The New Moon in Cancer is exact overnight technically on July 14th, perfecting tonight at 2:43am PDT. It’s building in power all day. Mercury is retrograde in Cancer, and in fact he and the Sun just had their meeting called the Inferior Conjunction yesterday. In every Mercury retrograde cycle, like clockwork, at the exact midpoint of the backward journey, he and the Sun come together in what’s called the Inferior Conjunction. This refers to Mercury being in between us and the Sun, and inferior might as well be called interior, as Mercury backward has him in the unconscious mind, where things are hidden from our awareness. The Sun is conscious awareness itself, so in this sliver of time, we receive important guidance from below, and what I like to call the potential for an aha moment of clarity.
The Moon is the luminary of the unconscious, dimly lit and constantly shapeshifting and occasionally going dark. The coming together of awareness (Sun) and the direct access to the unconscious (Moon) is the same principle in action. Conscious awareness has such deep access to the fertile soil of creativity in every New Moon by shining the Sun’s light into spaces below awareness. But we have that same principle at work with the Sun and Mercury Rx, a double down on becoming aware of things still hidden from view. Mercury will carry this imprinting moment through much of this outrageous lunar cycle, revealing even more in the weeks to come.
This is a perfect setup for Cancer to rise into its fullest expression of caring and nurturing our desires, but Mother will also demand the most of you. If life is a hero’s journey, it’s the Cancer mansion that drives our hero with ancient motivations handed down generation after generation and imprinted upon us in our family of origin. The outer planets and Saturn began to crack us open three years ago, with extra emphasis on the time since January of 2025. We have been conscripted into the army of the revolution to usher in the promise of the Age of Aquarius, a unified world where all people are cared for. We’ve been through basic training, and this is the last moment at home before going into battle.
Of course, the outer battles are a reflection of the internal ones that we humans carry with us. People who feel embattled can only contribute that fight as an offering to the collective consciousness. We now have to uncreate personal structures of oppression so that we can know personal freedom, and then contribute more value to our community trying to do the same. The Hero as an archetype goes on a quest to find the thing of value that is then brought back to humanity as a gift. Old perceptions of the limited self must break down in order to be reborn as the transformed hero. This lunar cycle mirrors the hero’s journey which starts at home, with a quiet call that will not abate. Listen for that and remember they don’t call it the still soft voice for nothing. What you bring back only time will tell, but it starts with intention.
At the personal level this is about our individual readiness to drop the vulnerability of uncertainty and risk. You can’t find the gift if you don’t leave the house (well, not literally; I never leave my house, and this is how I thrive). This can be hard if we feel alone and unsupported, but Cancer will not distinguish between biological family and our families of choice. Likeminded community is key to doing the mighty work of ushering in this Age. Mercury Rx makes this entire lunar cycle devoted to transforming how you see your life, past, present, and future. We can’t climb the mountain of our own victory without good preparation. What’s that trope, something about opportunity plus preparation? Whatever it is, we are all facing this both personally and collectively. Preparation is now; the mountain of opportunity arrives in two weeks.
Do you know what you desire? More importantly, are you willing to go through the boot camp of self-investigation and integration to get it? The Moon, Sun, and Mercury are loosely Squaring Saturn, so this is not a moment of reward; it’s a call to responsibility and hard work. The Great Teacher is agitating the Nodes of the Moon so uncomfortably that if there’s anything you have to face before moving forward, you can be certain it will show itself to you between now and the Full Moon. Mercury’s backward stance will delay some of the benefit of this moment, as Cancer guards our wounds tightly for our own protection. Cancer craves comfort, but we must all learn how to be present while allowing discomfort like never before. Some of you may have to pry the crab’s shell open with force.
The Nodes of the Moon are hovering at the 0° of Pisces and Virgo. For the last eighteen months, Pisces has been our north star, guiding us to trust the flow of the river of life. Just before the Full Moon the Nodes will change signs, and the guiding light of our North Node becomes Aquarius. This is one of the crafty and elegant ways of the solar system. In the commencement of the most disruptive lunar cycle ever, the collective is still pulled by Pisces’ sense of oneness and unity with all. But when the surgery of the Full Moon arrives, the marching orders change. The South Node in Leo helps us let go of serving the self, and the North Node in Aquarius guides us to serve the humanity we now feel more connected to than ever.
At almost 22° Cancer, the only direct aspect from that point is an Inconjunct to Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius. This fork-in-the-road geometry tells us that this cycle is going to assist us in letting go of some of the shame and old shadow material that we have scraped off our channels over the past nine months. This Inconjunct is like finally getting to the exit for grandmother’s house after a long drive. We’re not there yet, but the heavy lifting is behind us. Acknowledge what you’ve been able to uncover and process this year, and do a last check of the corners in the basement to make sure you haven’t missed anything. This is such a beneficial element, but like much in this New Moon, it promises an even wilder time in the Leo Full Moon on July 29th.
The magic point right now is 4°. The outers are all lining up to meet in perfect geometric application this month, which is of course the reflection of the amplification of the chaos this summer (winter down under). Chiron in Taurus is beautifully aligned with the Nodes as they are, helping us join the river of life with more mastery of co-creation and a trust in your own resources. Venus in Chiron’s ruling sign of Virgo is at 4° as we start this day. It’s as if the goddess just popped into the hot yoga class right as it’s about to start, telling us that love will lead the healing, and to allow for being out of your comfort zone for a bit. Yeah, even more so than it’s already been, if you can believe that.
The New Moon also kicks off a 13-hour Void. It begins the moment the New Moon is exact overnight and stretches until 3:34pm tomorrow afternoon, when the Moon moves into Leo. A Void Moon after a New Moon in Cancer is almost ironic, as this entire cycle is ruled by the Moon. We will float into tomorrow in a watery Void that might feel like the stillness under the rushing tides of change on the surface. This might make tomorrow a difficult day to get started, but the opportunity today and tonight as we sleep, is that so much of the work is being done at the unconscious level. Enjoy any and all the rest you can cultivate for yourself, but remember the call. We rest to serve.
Here’s the quiet genius of this New Moon: Cancer is sending us backward and inward, and not to hide. We’re going home to pack. Every memory we revisit, every wound we finally name, every corner of the basement we sweep out becomes a provision for the road ahead. So let the crab be a crab. Pull in, go still, and trust that the deepest water is always the quietest. The mountain will keep for two weeks, so tonight, the most heroic thing you can do is close your eyes. Have at it!
